I’ve been a content creator since 2009, and I’ve tried a LOT of gear! Today I’m excited to share my favourites, and I hope this helps you choose what you love too. Just remember: your actual content is far more important than your gear. You can start creating amazing content with just your phone! However, once you’re ready to step up your game, here are the best cameras, microphones and lights for 2024 that I recommend.

Cameras
When it comes to content creation, having a reliable camera is essential. For those with a higher budget, the Canon EOS R6 reigns supreme. With its snappy autofocus and impressive image quality, this camera is a favorite among content creators looking for top-tier performance. This is the camera that I use for most of my YouTube videos, and I use it for the beauty shots at the end of my short form videos.
But what if you’re working with a tighter budget? Fear not, because the Canon M50 is here to save the day. Offering excellent image quality at a more affordable price point, this camera is perfect for creators who want to invest in quality without breaking the bank. It’s also small, so it’s a great vlogging camera. I use mine for this purpose, and I also hang it off of a curtain rod above the workstation in my studio to shoot top-down tutorial videos.
It’s also worth noting that most smartphone cameras are more than capable of producing high-quality content, especially when you’re just starting out. Don’t let the lack of a high-end camera hold you back from unleashing your creativity!
Microphones
Crystal-clear audio can take your content to the next level, and the right microphone can make all the difference. For those with a higher budget, the DJI Mic is a standout choice. With two lavalier mics and unparalleled sound quality, this microphone ensures that your voice is heard loud and clear. I bought this mic set last year and I’m absolutely HEAD OVER HEELS for it. It’s changed my career, for sure!
If you’re working with a more modest budget, the PoP voice lavalier microphone is a fantastic option. Despite its affordable price tag, this microphone delivers clear sound quality that rivals more expensive alternatives. Just keep in mind that it does come with a cord, so you’ll need to factor that into your setup.
I also like this on-camera microphone by Rode. It’s great if you’re planning to stay within a meter or so of your camera.
Lights
Proper lighting can make or break your content, so investing in quality lights is a must. For those who value versatility, the NEEWER CB100 100W LED Video Light is an excellent choice. With the ability to change color temperature and brightness, this light allows you to customize your lighting setup to suit any situation.
If you’re on a tighter budget, the MOUNTDOG Softbox kit is a fantastic option. Affordable and easy to transport, this kit comes with two lights that deliver soft, flattering light perfect for any content creation setup.
If you don’t have a budget for lighting, natural light will always reign supreme anyhow. Plan your shoots for midday near a window at home, or shoot outside at golden hour. I prefer natural lighting for my room makeover beauty shots, so I’m always ready to shoot around noon on a sunny day!
Creating high-quality content doesn’t have to be expensive. With the right cameras, microphones, and lights, you can elevate your content creation game without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, investing in quality equipment is a surefire way to take your content to the next level. I hope this list helped you out if you’re looking for new gear, but don’t forget: it’s your content that matters, not the gear. Create amazing content that helps people, and buying great gear is just the icing on the cake! Here are my best tips on how to be consistent with your content by creating a simple content calendar.
