Today, let’s talk about a topic close to the heart of every creative soul: dealing with creative burnout. Whether you’re an avid DIY decor enthusiast or a seasoned influencer in the field, there comes a time when the creative well runs dry, leaving you feeling uninspired and drained. But don’t worry, because in this post, I’ll share some tried-and-true strategies to reignite your passion, rejuvenate your creativity, and emerge stronger than ever before!
This June, I’ll have been a DIY decor blogger for 15 years. FIFTEEN YEARS! I’m finding it hard to wrap my head around this, but it’s definitely a milestone that I’ll be celebrating. That’s a lot of years of creating consistent content for my readers!
You better believe that I’ve experienced a lot of creative burnout over these 15 years as a blogger (then YouTuber, then social media influencer). Of course there are days, or weeks or months where I don’t feel very creative. Here are some of the strategies I’ve used when I experience these times of burnout, and I hope these tips help you when you experience burnout, too. (It’s not something to be ashamed of – it happens and it’s normal!)

Recognizing the Signs
First things first, let’s talk about recognizing the signs of creative burnout. It can sneak up on you quickly, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated. Do you find yourself staring blankly at your supplies, unable to summon an ounce of inspiration? Are you experiencing a lack of enthusiasm for projects you once loved? These could be signs that you’re experiencing burnout.
Embrace the Pause
When you hit a creative roadblock, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s okay to take a step back and embrace the pause. Give yourself permission to step away from your projects for a moment and focus on self-care. Take a leisurely stroll in nature, curl up with a good book, or indulge in your favorite hobby outside of what you’re creating content about. Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to gain fresh perspective and recharge your creative batteries.
Seek Inspiration Everywhere
Inspiration is all around us, waiting to be discovered. Take a break from scrolling through social media feeds and instead, immerse yourself in the world around you. Visit art galleries, explore flea markets, or simply take a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood. You never know where inspiration may strike – perhaps in the vibrant hues of a sunset or the gorgeous details of a vintage piece of furniture. Keep your senses open and let the world ignite your creativity once more.
Mix It Up
Stuck in a creative rut? Shake things up a bit! Experiment with new techniques, materials, or styles that you haven’t explored before. Step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to try something different. Whether it’s incorporating bold colors into your palette or experimenting with unconventional textures, pushing your creative boundaries can breathe new life into your projects and reignite your passion for DIY decor.
Connect with Community
As a DIY decor influencer, you’re part of a vibrant and supportive community of like-minded individuals. Don’t hesitate to reach out and connect with fellow creators who understand what you’re going through. Share your experiences, seek advice, or simply lend a listening ear. Sometimes, knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles can provide the encouragement and motivation you need to overcome creative burnout.
Practice Mindfulness
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Take a moment to slow down and practice mindfulness in your creative process. Whether it’s through meditation, journaling, exercising, or simply taking deep breaths, mindfulness can help center your thoughts, alleviate stress, and foster a deeper connection with your creative endeavors. By being present in the moment, you can tap into your inner creativity and find joy in the process once more.
Set Realistic Goals
Setting ambitious goals can be a great motivator, but it’s important to strike a balance and set realistic expectations for yourself. Break down your larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks and celebrate each milestone along the way. By setting achievable goals, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and momentum that can propel you forward, even during times of creative burnout. Don’t be ashamed if you have to make your “to do” list smaller. I do this all the time, haha!
Embrace Imperfection
Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword, often leading to self-doubt and paralysis in your creative pursuits. Embrace the beauty of imperfection and allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes along the way. Remember that creativity is a journey, not a destination, and each project is an opportunity for growth and learning. By letting go of the need for perfection, you’ll find liberation in your creativity and rediscover the joy of DIY decor. Your community will appreciate your authenticity, too.
Practice Self-Compassion
Last but certainly not least, practice self-compassion as you navigate through periods of creative burnout. Be gentle with yourself and recognize that it’s okay to have off days. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would extend to a friend facing similar challenges. Remember that your worth as a creator is not defined by your productivity, and that taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is paramount.
You can also practice self-compassion on your future self by having a few extra finished projects all filmed or photographed and ready to go. That way, when you feel burnt out you can publish these projects so you don’t have to create anything new. Another spin on this is to publish some “round-up” posts or videos of your past projects when you’re not feeling that creative. I find that people love to see my past projects in an easy-to-digest list!
Creative burnout is a natural part of the creative process, but it doesn’t have to derail your passion for DIY decor. By trying my tips above, you can navigate through periods of burnout with grace and resilience. So take a deep breath, be kind to yourself, and remember that your creativity will not run out even if you take a little break – the best is yet to come!
