How to be an Influencer on Instagram
Are you passionate about sharing your life, expertise, or creativity with the world? Do you dream of building a community around your interests and making a positive impact? Instagram offers an incredible platform for aspiring influencers to connect, inspire, and grow. In this post I’ll explore actionable steps to help you kickstart your journey and become a successful influencer on Instagram.
I’ve been on Instagram since 2013, and it’s been my favourite online community ever since I shared my first post. The people on there generally so supportive, creative and inspiring. To this day, Instagram is the place I go to first when I’m looking for kindred spirits.
Instagram has changed a lot over the last 11 years I’ve been on it. Now, I see it more as a short video sharing platform (“Reels”) than a photo sharing platform, and Reels are what I usually share there. Even though there’s now a lot of competition on Instagram, I still believe it’s a valuable place to share your passion, find your community, and potentially make an income – whether it’s through sponsored content, or by driving Instagram followers to your paid product.

Find Your Niche
Before diving into the world of Instagram influencing, it’s essential to identify your niche. What are you passionate about? What topics or themes resonate with you? Whether it’s fashion, fitness, travel, food, beauty, or DIY, choosing a niche that aligns with your interests and expertise will make your content more authentic and engaging. I DO believe that people can be successful sharing a wide variety of topics, however I think that you’ll grow faster initially if you narrow down your niche.
Define Your Unique Voice
In a sea of influencers, authenticity is key. Define your unique voice and personality that sets you apart from others in your niche. Whether you’re witty, insightful, relatable, or inspirational, infuse your content with your authentic self to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
You may also want to integrate a unique style of video or photo editing, or use the same colour scheme in each post. Anything you can do to make you stand out of the crowd and make people recognize you is a good idea!
Create High-Quality Content
Instagram is a visual platform, so investing in high-quality content is essential. Use a high-resolution camera or smartphone to capture clear and compelling photos and videos. Experiment with different editing styles, filters, and compositions to enhance your visual storytelling. Consistency is key, so aim to maintain a cohesive aesthetic that reflects your brand identity by using some of the strategies I listed above.
Engage with Your Audience
Building a loyal community requires genuine engagement with your audience. Respond to comments, direct messages, and mentions to foster meaningful connections. Host Q&A sessions, polls, and live streams to interact with your followers in real-time. Show appreciation for their support and feedback to cultivate a sense of belonging and loyalty.
Truly listening to your followers will also help you curate content that helps them! What are their needs? What are some reoccurring questions they have that you can provide an answer to?
I like to imagine my audience as just one person, and think about how I can help them on a personal level. Creating an imaginary avatar with your ideal target audience’s likes, dislikes, needs, etc. can help you create consistent content that connects.
Collaborate with Brands and Other Influencers
Collaborating with brands and fellow influencers can help expand your reach and credibility. Research and reach out to brands that align with your values and audience demographics. Negotiate mutually beneficial partnerships, such as sponsored posts, affiliate marketing, or product collaborations. Additionally, collaborating with other influencers through shout-outs, joint projects, or Instagram takeovers can introduce you to new audiences and strengthen your network. It’s a good idea to reach out to fellow creators with a similar niche and follower size as yourself.
Stay Consistent
Consistency is key to building a successful presence on Instagram. (It’s key for all of content creation, and you can listen to my podcast about how important consistency is right here.) Develop a content schedule and stick to it to maintain a steady flow of posts. However, remember to prioritize quality over quantity. Do the best you can when you create your content, but don’t let yourself get stuck thinking you have to be perfect. The best way to learn how to create good content is to consistently share content, see how it does, and create something better the next time based off of what you’ve learned!
Analyze and Adapt
As you navigate your journey as an Instagram influencer, it’s essential to track your performance and adapt accordingly. Use Instagram Insights or third-party analytics tools to monitor key metrics such as engagement rate, reach, and follower growth. Analyze which types of content resonate most with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly. Experiment with new formats, trends, and strategies to keep your content fresh and engaging. Like all social media, Instagram is always changing and its wise to keep adapting and growing with it.
Stay Inspired and Evolve
The world of social media is constantly evolving, so it’s essential to stay inspired and adaptable. Keep up with industry trends, attend workshops, and seek inspiration from other influencers and creatives. Don’t be afraid to pivot or explore new opportunities that align with your interests and goals. Remember, the journey to becoming a successful influencer is as much about personal growth and learning as it is about building a following. One of the reasons I love being a content creator is because I never stop learning!
Making Money on Instagram
Once you’ve built an engaged community on the app, there are several ways you can make an income through Instagram. First, you can post affiliate links in your Stories to products you love and share. You can learn more about affiliate links here. Next, you can lead your Instagram followers to your website where you have products or services for sale. Or, you can lead them to your blog or YouTube channel where you may receive ad revenue. Finally, you could work with brands to produce sponsored content in your IG Stories, through Reels, or through Instagram photo posts. I’ve had a lot of fun brand collaborations on Instagram that have paid quite well. There are lots of great options when it comes to making money through Instagram!
