Are you an influencer? Here’s why you NEED a blog.
If you’re a social media influencer or content creator, you might have a strong or growing presence on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and/or TikTok. However, have you ever thought about how those platforms could be taken away from you at a moment’s notice? Whether the platform has a glitch, shuts down your account, or you have a scammer take over your account… you’re ultimately not in control of those platforms. You don’t own them. But what CAN you own? A blog! I’m a huge fan of ensuring you have your own blog as a content creator so that you have a hub that YOU OWN. Here’s why I’ve fallen back in love with my blog over the last couple of years, and how YOU can start one and fall in love with it too!

Last year my blog ad revenue overtook my YouTube ad revenue which was so amazing and surprising! We’ve been working really hard on getting The DIY Mommy full of helpful DIY & decor posts. All of the work has paid off, and now my blog is making even more money than my YouTube channel.
It’s reminded me that there is a LOT of value in having my own website… I’ve had it for almost 15 years now! Not only can I make money off ad revenue from my blog, but I own my domain name and all of my content, and I have complete control over it. My site, The DIY Mommy, is truly my home base for everything that I do.
Not only is my blog valuable because I OWN IT, but I also love taking a break from having my face on camera for videos. There’s something so peaceful and rewarding about simply sitting down to WRITE without having to put myself in front of a camera. I’ve been loving turning old videos and experiences into helpful blog posts for my readers.
How do you start a blog?
I recommend purchasing your own domain name and hosting package, and then installing WordPress to start a blog.

WordPress is an incredible tool that will allow you to create a beautiful website. Plus, it integrates will with the ad networks you may want to work with, which I’ll share about next.
How do you make money with a blog?
To make an income with a blog, you can be a part of an ad network. You could start by installing Google AdSense code on your website, and making money per ad click. You’ll need a high quality blog with a good amount of content to be accepted. However, it’s easier to get into than the bigger ad networks. How do you ensure you’re creating a high quality blog? Make sure your content is helpful, and try focusing on articles based off of highly searched keywords with low competition. My favourite tool to find such keywords in my niche is RankIQ! You do have to pay for it, but my website has grown so much as I’ve written blog posts based off of keywords I’ve found here.
Once your blog grows, you can apply to be a part of one of the two most popular blog ad networks: Raptive (the one my main site is on; you’ll need a minimum of 100,000 monthly pageviews) or Mediavine (you will need minimum 50,000 monthly sessions on your blog to apply). Mediavine also just launched a new program called Journey this year. You only need around 10,000 monthly sessions to apply, which is interesting! You can check it out here.
What are you waiting for?
So, if you’re a content creator with no blog…. START ONE! It only costs a dollar or two a month to buy your own domain name, and not much more for hosting. You could build the site on your own by following some YouTube tutorials, or have it hired out. Someone like Restored316 would be great (I LOVE their WordPress templates and services).
I don’t think you’ll regret having a home base that is truly YOURS, and a platform that you can grow and monetize through the years. You might be surprised at how much income you can make from your blog if you truly make it amazing!
